Each primary care medical practice has its own process for repeat prescribing, although some general principles apply in most cases. It is important to book your appointment early, before your medication runs out, as there may be a few days’ wait before you can see your GP. Repeat prescriptions are usually only provided for patients who are well known to the practice, and medicines that require closer monitoring, such as narcotics or other drugs that could be misused, are often subject to stricter prescribing controls.
Some patients need to be reviewed every three months, while others may only need a review every six months before a repeat prescription can be issued. If you have not been seen within the required timeframe, we may not be able to provide your repeat prescription until you have been reviewed in the clinic. In some cases, a GP may prescribe up to six months of medication, but this is entirely at their discretion after considering a range of factors to ensure your safety. Please do not be offended if your request is declined, as this is done in the best interests of your health and wellbeing.
